History Renewed
The art of canvas intervention has deep roots in modern artistic expression.
Lucio Fontana, the visionary founder of Spatialism and pioneer of abstract painting, first introduced the revolutionary act of slashing canvas in the mid-20th century. Beginning in 1949–50, Fontana punctured holes—or buchi—through his canvases, literally breaking through the surface to reveal the space that lies beyond, inviting viewers to perceive dimensions previously hidden.
This evolution from spatial exploration to personal narrative represents a profound shift in artistic intention, where technique becomes biography and every slice tells the story of growth, struggle, and the courage to just start /
Christie Kaplan honors this rich legacy while forging an entirely new narrative. Where Fontana explored spatial concepts, Christie transforms the slicing technique into intimate storytelling, each deliberate cut revealing pivotal moments in a founder's journey.
Her careful incisions expose layers of intention and depth, creating windows into the entrepreneurial moments of breakthrough, vulnerability, and transformation made tangible through the physical act of opening the canvas.
