The art of canvas intervention has deep roots in modern artistic expression.
Lucio Fontana, the visionary founder of Spatialism and pioneer of abstract painting, first introduced the revolutionary act of slashing canvas in the mid-20th century. Beginning in 1949–50, Fontana punctured holes—or buchi—through his canvases, literally breaking through the surface to reveal the space that lies beyond, inviting viewers to perceive dimensions previously hidden.
